OSHA Voluntary Protection Program Star Award January 1998. Eight years ago, the VPP was opened to the construction industry as a work-site specific program. The three awards available from OSHA include the Demonstration Award, the Merit Award, and the Star Award. The Star Award is the highest and most difficult to receive. Ryan management and labor force formed a partnership with Iowa OSHA and applied for three sites. Following fifteen months of intense evaluation by Iowa OSHA, Ryan received the most prestigious award OSHA can place with a contractor.
- Ryan was the first home-based construction contractor in the state of Iowa to receive the Star Award.
- Ryan is the only mechanical contractor in the country to currently hold the award.
- This is the first time the United Association, the United Brotherhood of Carpenters, and the Structural and Ornamental Iron Workers Union have been signatory groups represented on Star award sites in the United States.
- Ryan & Associates, Inc. was the first company to apply and be accepted for three construction sites at once.
- OSHA record shows a total of 28 VPP Star sites in construction nationwide.
- This Award is of such significant importance to Iowa OSHA that the presentation was made by Mr. Byron Orton, the Labor Commissioner for the state of Iowa.

Ryan’s Monsanto Crews worked over 43,000 manhours in one month, and completed the annual plant shutdown Recordable Injury Free.
2.5 Years OSHA Recordable Injury Free, Cargill Co., Blair, NE
